U14 Girls Gold
The U14 Scorpion girls played a tremendous game against the Sunshine Coast Scorpions in the final for the District Cup. Our Scorpions outplayed the league-leading opposition, and deserved to take home the honours, but were undone by one play and home turf advantage.
There were very few scoring chances, as both defensive lines were awesome. Kayli Wilkinson and Michelle Tennent, together with Shay Cyr and Erin Rochetta sharing the other fullback spot, proved to be just as tough as their counterparts at the other end.
Calli Wessels and Ashleigh LoGiacco were very effective checking at midfield, and Alison McClements organized an efficient attack. They came close, but were unable to beat a solid defense and keeper.
The Sunshine Coast team finally got a break late in the second to score the only goal of the game.
U16 Girls
The U16 girls lost 1-0 against Chilliwack United on a cold, snowy day. The only goal was a great high shot, within the first minutes of the game, and caught our goalie off guard. Shelby Yaky went on to play a flawless game in net. Our midfielders pushed the ball through many times, but we were unable to put the ball in the net. Jagjot Sanghera was taken down a few times, and the rough play sent her off with a sprained ankle. Kelsey Hopkins was pushed, and pulled her calf, Tina Sanga is out with a hip injury, and Teeana Munro has moved out of town. Our short bench did not give up. Lindsey Fletcher had some nice passes and good shots. Aislinn Merkel, was a steady sweeper, and Alyssa Franklin played well on the left wing. The team will be concentrating on shots on net at practices this week.
U12 Boys
In a quarterfinal Commonwealth Cup game against the West Van strikers, Squamish came out really strong. Lynden McPhie put Squamish up 1-0 about eight minutes into the game. United controlled the rest of the first half. West Van came out pressing in the second half and tied up the game. Ian Kerr put Squamish up 2-1 with a determined effort. Ian added insurance with a penalty shot shortly after. Chad Pereira sealed the deal with a break away goal. United still put on pressure and Felipe Vivanco scored for a final score of 5-1. Player of the game was Peter Dunkley for his solid performance in midfield.
On Saturday (Feb. 12), United traveled to Jericho Park on a beautiful Saturday afternoon to face Point Grey. Ian Kerr scored a beautiful goal from just outside the 18-yard line late in the first period. Point Grey continued to press hard but our defence turned them back allowing only one shot on net. Felipe Vivanco volleyed another beautiful shot outside the 18 making it 2-nil.
Coach's player of the game was Monroe Lawrence for his determination and effort.
On Sunday (Feb. 13), United traveled to face the first place Lynn Valley Hawks for the Provincial Cup quarter-finals. Lynn Valley came out attacking hard but the Squamish counter attack made it a very good game. Lynn valley managed to get a few shots away only to be denied by keeper Jagdeep Tatla. Late in the first half Lynn Valley scored off a corner kick. With about 10 minutes left to play, Myles Daske put the ball to Chad Pereira who fed the ball through to Ian Kerr who got the shot away to tie the game and send us into overtime. Chad sent Ian again to perform his magic and rifle another beautiful shot past the keeper making it 2-1 at the end of the first 10 minutes. Coach's player of the game is Jagdeep Tatla for his strong performance in net.
U13 Boys
The Gunners were hosts to Richmond Hammers. The Gunners fell behind 1-0 early in the first half. The lead did not last long, though, as Jotty Sidhu took a very well placed shot into the bottom corner to tie the game at 1-1. The Gunners were the better team from that point on but could not score on the Hammers' goalie. The coaches were very pleased with the passing that the Gunners were making in all positions. The Hammers scored with seconds left to win 2-1. The Gunners played so well it was a very tough loss.
U15 Boys
Gold Division One U15 Boys played away in Burnaby on Saturday to Cliff Avenue. In a game that saw Squamish take control after a pretty even first 10 minutes Squamish showed why they are pushing for top honours in the top league. With Squamish pushing hard for the opening goal a solid Cliff Avenue defense managed to get to halftime with a 0-0 score. The second half saw Squamish turn it up a notch to take complete control and in the 70th minute centre forward Dylan Ackerman created space for himself, turned and fired home a great goal. Goalkeeper Joe Pilnasek had one save to make the whole game and he was more than up to the task (Great save Joe!). Final score, Squamish United 1 Cliff Avenue 0.
U17 Boys
The U17 Boys Scorpions on Sunday played their first game on grass since December. After a dismal weekend on the all-weather fields in which they suffered their first league loss of the season, falling 2-1 to the Richmond Aces (with only a Joe Heywood header finding net) and lost their second-round Provincial Cup match to the Lions Gate Capilanos Gold, they were glad to return to a softer pitch.
After a tentative start against the Dunbar Kaos, at the 20-minute mark David Metzler pounced on a ball misplayed by the Vancouver keeper. The Kaos stormed back with 2 rather fortunate goals to take a 2-1 lead into recess. About 15 minutes into the second frame Kyle Blackett buried a loose ball after a Jeremy Ennis corner and Jason Patchell then put the Scorps back in front. Dunbar changed netminders and the new keep made two marvellous saves and enabled his team to come back and tie. Five minutes from full time Jason took a through ball and blasted a shot that the goalie had no chance on, and Squamish escaped with a 4-3 win. A showdown for first in the league is now set for Saturday (Feb. 19) at 2:30 at Brennan Park against the other 7-1-0 squad, Wesburn Wolves.
