U15 Girls Gold
The U15 Squamish Scorpion Girls Gold had a terrific start to the season, winning 3-0 against the Langley Rush.
After an exciting back-and-forth start, Krigi Marti fired a smart shot into the top corner on a free kick. Minutes later, Raina Shortreed found the net with a powerful shot from 30 yards out.
Michelle Tennent and newcomer Addy Menican were exceptional defensively, and Alison McClements and Kayli Wilkinson were solid controlling the midfield in the first half.
Late in the game, a nice feed up the middle from Alison found Sydney Evans, who fought off the defense and fired it low into the corner for a third well-deserved goal.
Keepers Ashleigh LoGiaccco and Rebecca Bolkowy earned the shutout.
U15 Silver Girls - Team Zuka
The U15 Silver Girls got off to a thunderous start and then blew a 3-0 lead to tie the game 3-3 against the North Shore Jaguars. With the wind behind them Squamish Team Zuka dominated the first half, where the ball rarely left the attacking zone. The first goal came from a beautiful pass by Marien Evans to Maddy Shemko, who scored the team's first goal of the season.
Minutes later a similar goal was added by Alison MacKellar, to be followed by another from Samantha Mee. Complacency set in and the team lost form in the second half. The midfield failed to get back, leaving the defense exposed. The Jaguars took advantage of the ragged performance and, with the wind in their favour, capitalized to deny the home side of what seemed like a sure victory. Player of the game was Courtney Robertson.
U-14 Boys Gunners
The Gunners played their first game of the season at home against the Richmond Gunners. This was Squamish first game in the Gold division and they had to play with a depleted line up. Four of the 16 players were out with injuries and others were not at 100 per cent. The Richmond Gunners took a 2-0 lead into the second half but it did not last long. Kelly McRae scored Squamish's first goal of the season and Sunny Sanghera scored to tie it up.
Richmond had four healthy substitutes and it took its toll on Squamish. With ten minutes left Richmond scored and won the game 3-2. The coaches were very proud of the effort put in by the Squamish team and we look forward to having a healthy team and playing Richmond again.
