Three businesses are coming together to fundraise for a covered skate park in Squamish.
, and are throwing a fundraiser at Sunny Chibas on Saturday, April 29, where they will raffle off two snowboards, eight skateboard decks and about 15 T-shirts.
Raffle tickets for the prizes are available at both Sunny Chibas and Stuntwood and are available at one ticket for $15 or three tickets for $30.
Aaron Lawton, co-owner of Sunny Chibas alongside Diana Frederickson, said all the proceeds from the event will go to the Squamish Skateboard Association, a recently formed non-profit organization.
“We really want to make this big and get a lot of people out there,” said Lawton. “It’s a community event [for] all ages. We’re going to make it freakin’ awesome.”
The event starts at 7 p.m., and there will be two bands performing. The raffle-winning snowboards are a special collaboration from D.O.P.E. and Sunny Chibas, as they have images of fried chicken and the Sunny Chibas logo printed on the boards.
As far as the covered skate park goes, Lawton said he’s always liked the culture that surrounds skateboarding and snowboarding so supporting a covered spot came naturally.
“Let's give some kids a place to go in the bloody winter,” he said.
Lawton said he hopes the draw of having lots of items up for grabs from the raffle will draw in more ticket buyers and said that the winners don’t need to be present at the event to still take home the prizes.
He said the amount raised would be a good starting point and to look out for other fundraisers.
“We got some more ideas to raise money, too,” he said.
