Old hockey players wanted

Sports

With no spectators in the stands and no score kept, the Squamish Old Timers certainly don't play for glory. But that doesn't mean they can't have fun, especially in the locker room.

"We get to relive that Stanley Cup winning goal," laughs league president Greg Van Hierden.

The Squamish Old Timers Hockey league starts another season Sept. 9, and they're asking anyone over 35-years-old to join. The league simply wants good skaters with even temperaments - it's not like there's a chance that a scout will scope them out, said Van Hierden.

What players are sure to get out of the league, however, is playing a sport they love as well as friendship. In fact, the league begins play Sept. 9 and 10 with a friendship tournament meant to interlace new players with old, and mix up the roster to allow a broader social aspect. The league then begins its official season Sept. 11 with each team playing twice a week. The season runs until the first week of April for a total of 40 games, and at a cost of $300 for the season, "it's about the cheapest adult hockey you'll find," said Van Hierden.

The fees go to ice time and referees, also in demand this year, who receive $35 per game. If the thought of playing with the over 35 set is still too daunting, the old old timers league - now in its second year - is also launching next month. The Hilltop Hockey league is looking for players 50 years and older for non-competitive, no contact games. The aged group of players enjoyed last year's "huffing and puffing" through the first season - and good-natured ribbing became as much of a sport as scoring. The elder league plays twice a month, every other Sunday at 8:15 p.m.
