Despite a valiant effort, Lucas Cruz missed the podium on May 14 at the second round of this year's season in Port Angeles, Washington.

The Pemberton native had enough speed to keep pace with the pro field, but was waylaid by an unfortunate crash. He landed in fifth, reaching the line in a time of two minutes, 10.65 seconds.

Squamish-based rider Coen Skrypnek emerged victorious (2:08.32). He was accompanied on the podium by Mark Wallace of Duncan (2:08.95) and Patrick Laffey of Qualicum Beach, 小蓝视频 (2:09.18).

"Well this weekend didn’t go to plan," Lucas said on his Instagram account. "Another crash in finals put me into 5th. Nice to know I’m riding fast, but need to make a few changes before Lenzerheide next month! Thanks to the Norco Factory Team for another best weekend ever!"

Lucas' younger brother, Tegan, also saw action in Port Angeles. He finished well back in 21st (2:18.27).

Gracey Hemstreet of Sechelt had better luck in the women's pro race. She rode to second place (2:30.15) between a pair of Americans: Taylor Ostgaard (2:29.12) and Julia Lofqvist Traum (2:33.72).

"Always a good time at [Port Angeles]," said Hemstreet on social media. "Felt great on the bike and ready to get the season started!"
