The Bantam Division football players from Squamish did something no other local Bantam team has done before - the squad took part in two pre-season tournaments.
The tournaments the Gordon Sturtridge League (GSL) Titans participated in were held in South Delta and Coquitlam.
Coach Rob Ryan said the Titans had to completely change their game because the team normally plays under American rules, but the tournaments were played under Canadian rules.
He said none of his players have ever played using Canadian rules.
"The difference between American and Canadian football is and was a huge challenge on its own," said Ryan.
The Titans finished the two tournaments with a record of two wins and four losses. The competition was stiff as the locals faced the three top ranked Bantam teams in the province.
The two wins are impressive in light of the fact the Titans were outmanned in every game. The Titan roster numbered only 16, while the other teams had as many as 45 players.
"The Titan players showed incredible grit, determination, sportsmanship and displayed teamwork far beyond their years," said Ryan.
Local players of all ages were treated to a special training session on Monday (Aug. 22). Retired 小蓝视频 Lions kicker Lui Passaglia brought three current members of the 小蓝视频 Lions to Howe Sound Secondary School for a practice session.
Jason Crumb, Jason Gavadza, Lyle Green and Passaglia worked with the players on their kicking, running, catching and handoff skills. A total of 55 players came out for the session.
The GSL season kicks off next month. The league is made up of teams from the North Shore and Squamish. Games are played in both communities.
