All right - so there's no NHL this season. But there is the Guns and Hoses hockey challenge, and it's happening at Brennan Park arena March 4.
The Squamish RCMP and fire department are going head to head and all the money raised at the tournament will go to the Humanity Village project and Cops for Cancer.
"We're trying to make it an annual thing," said Steve Virgint from the fire department. The charity tournament has run twice in the past and most of the money went to the food bank. This year the money is being divided between two charities.
"We really like the idea we're helping one village," Virgint said. "We thought that was a pretty important one."
The fire department has an all-female line, as well as an over-50 line. Both the RCMP and the fire department teams are made up of members or their families.
"We're not going to stack teams," Virgint said.
But the game will be competitive.
"It should be a very high-end hockey game," Virgint said, noting there are skilled players on both teams.
"The fire department will win of course."
There will be events and entertainment for the whole family. Sparky the safety dog will be there, along with the RCMP mascot. The bunny and Novice Killer Eagles ringette teams will be on the ice during the intermission, and during the second intermission there will be a puck toss. The puck toss ticket are $2, and 100 pucks will be sold. The pucks are tossed onto the ice towards buckets, and the closes thrower of the closest puck gets a prize. There will be door prizes and T-shirts for sale.
Admission is $2 and can be purchased at the door, which opens at 7 p.m. Tickets can also be purchased at the fire department from Virgint or Kelly. The event starts at 7:30 p.m. and goes until 9:30 p.m.
