MONTREAL — A freezing rain warning has been lifted for Montreal and surrounding regions, but smog and fog alerts remain in place in the city with heavy rainfall expected in some parts of Quebec.

Environment Canada says freezing rain in several parts of the province on Saturday and overnight into Sunday led to slippery road conditions that caused several car accidents, including one that was fatal.

A freezing rain warning remained in effect on Sunday afternoon for more northern parts of the province, but temperatures in Montreal rose to 3 C.

Meanwhile, Environment Canada has issued rainfall warnings for several regions, including Quebec City and Trois-Rivières, where 25 to 35 millimetres of rain are expected beginning Sunday night.

Temperatures in Montreal are expected to rise to 10 C on Monday, bringing up to 20 millimetres of rain.

A smog warning remains in effect for Montreal, and it's recommended that asthmatic children and people with respiratory ailments or heart disease avoid intense outdoor physical activity. Environment Canada says wood heating is the main source of fine particles that contribute to smog in the winter.

The agency is also warning of dense fog in southern Quebec, including in Montreal, which it says will persist until Monday morning. It says visibility may be suddenly reduced to near zero, and is warning drivers to slow down and be prepared to stop.

Montreal temperatures are expected to drop back down to -6 C by the end of the week.
