Squamish bus riders soon able to pay transit fares electronically

Cash will still be accepted for transit riders who prefer it.

Squamish buses will soon have a new electronic transit fare system.

By the summer of 2023, Transit riders will be able to pay fares using a variety of payment methods through the “Umo” system. 

Initially, riders will be able to pay with an app or a reloadable smart card.

In the future, riders will be able to pay with personal debit/credit cards and mobile wallets. 

Cash will still be accepted for transit riders who prefer it.

The price of passes and rides will remain the same. 

“This is a great new system that will help to remove barriers and make it easier for people to hop on the bus without having to scramble for exact change or passes,” said Mayor Armand Hurford, in a news release. “It’s our hope that these changes will encourage folks to more frequently incorporate our transit system into their day-to-day travel or commute.”

СƵ Transit’s Electronic Fare Collection System Project is partly funded through the and the Government of Canada. The District's is one of 30 transit systems across the province set to implement Umo.
