While Squamish was saved from wildfires this summer, our neighbours to the north have not been so lucky, as these striking images show.
The Birkenhead Lake wildfire was started by a lightning strike and discovered on Aug. 5.
Squamish’s Matt Maddaloni sent in these photos of what remains of that fire. The pictures were taken on Sept. 7 at 10 p.m. from the Birkenhead Lake campground.
As of Sept. 10, a spokesperson for the 小蓝视频 Wildfire Service said the fire continues to be held, as it has for about a week, and remains at about 770 hectares in size.
There are currently 218 active wildfires in 小蓝视频, being fought by 316 firefighting personnel.
Of active wildfires in 小蓝视频, 91% were caused by lightning, while 7% were human caused and 2% are of undetermined causes.
So far this year, the province has seen 1,605 wildfires started and 1,056,637 hectares burned.
