Hot spot extinguished at Squamish Mills building on Saturday

This was the same building that ignited less than a week before.

Did you see some smoke downtown on Saturday morning and wonder what was up?

Squamish Fire crews doused a small hot spot on Saturday, Nov. 12, at the Squamish Mills site.

Asked about this Saturday, the District said on Monday: “Crews investigated and cooled a hot spot. There is nothing else of note.”

The building was significantly burned in a large fire, which started just before noon on Nov. 6.

Approximately 35 firefighters responded with seven vehicles, and other emergency services personnel were on-site at the time as well. The fire was knocked down by late that night.

The building was built in 1973, according to local historian and sitting District councillor Eric Andersen.

“Squamish Mills Ltd. was started in 1951 by Pat Brennan and John Drenka — and thus is the second oldest continuously active locally-owned company in the corridor, after John Hunter Co.," said Andersen, 0after the original fire occurred.
