Celebrate Earth Day at the seventh annual Brohm Lake Clean-Up Sunday, April 25 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Everyone is welcome to take part both as spectators and volunteers. The 2004 Brohm Lake Clean-Up is registered with Canadas Earth Day celebrations held right across the country along with Squamish Pitch-In Week.
"There has been so much material found by the scuba divers that in seven years, the entire lake has yet to be totally cleaned," reports organizer Karen Yaremkewich. "Things such as household appliances, furniture and sports equipment have been found in the lake. Who knows, this year, someone might find a perfectly good laptop."
Volunteers are needed for a few things. Ezee Breathers Scuba Club divers collect refuse underwater and give it to volunteers sitting in kayaks on the surface. More volunteers separate the material into recyclables and landfill material. People can also participate by walking the trails around Brohm Lake and cleaning up any garbage they find. This garbage will also be sorted. Gloves and bags will be provided. The deposit returns on bottles found will be matched dollar for dollar by The Chief and the total amount will be donated to a local charity.
Each participant will receive a certificate from the Professional Association of Dive Instructors (PADI) Project Aware program, a program dedicated to the preservation of aquatic environments. It will also contribute towards the Communities in Bloom contest.
There will be free refreshments for volunteers courtesy of MarketPlace IGA, McDonald's and the District of Squamish. Lunch will be served on the lakeside by volunteers and District of Squamish councillors. The founders of the event are Sea to Sky Ocean Sports and the Ezee Breather Scuba Club. Other sponsors include Shaw Cable, DOS Pitch-In Week, the Ministry of Forests, the Howe Sound Inn and Brewing Company and The Chief.
