ABOUT TOWN: Win one for Mom at raffle

The annual spring sale and Mother's Day raffle sponsored by the Women's Auxiliary to the Squamish General Hospital will be held Saturday (May 8) from 9 a.m. to noon at St. John's Anglican Church (behind the Sea to Sky Hotel).

There's something a little different this year as it will be a "loonie/toonie" garage sale and bake sale. The raffle prizes are: a Garden Centre gift certificate; a jewelry box; and a gift certificate to the Sunrise Restaurant. All proceeds from this sale go towards the purchase of equipment for the hospital.



After a most successful run, there are just two more performances of the hit musical 42nd Street as presented by the Howe Sound Secondary's musical theatre class remaining. Tonight (May 7) and Saturday (May 8) are your last chances to see and enjoy talent at its best. Doors open at 7 p.m., with the performance beginning at 7:30 p.m.. Tickets at $10 for adults and $7 for students are available at Stylezone and the school. A few of my friends and I will be in the audience tonight.



There is always a need for funds for the local SPCA and a chance for you to support this service to our community is by attending the SPCA garage and plant sale Saturday (May 8) from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at #16 Bracken Park in Brackendale.



This is definitely the time for spring sales and the Waldorf Cedar Valley School is hosting its annual May Fair Festival and plant sale Saturday (May 8). The plant sale starts at 9 a.m. with the festival starting at 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The location is 40708 Olsen Rd. (just before Leski's Crossing when heading north) and be assured there will be signs posted and plenty of parking. The Songbird Festival continues on Saturday (May 8) with film footage of migratory birds entitled "Winged Migration" and will be seen at the Brackendale Art Gallery at 7:30 p.m.. On Sunday, May 9, "Gardening is for the Birds" is a chance to gather at the Unity Garden at Cleveland and Victoria from 1 to 4 p.m. to help create a demonstration wildlife garden. A Native Plant Walk is planned from 1:30 to 3:30 pm. On Sunday in the Squamish Estuary. Meet at the Vancouver Street entrance.



Mothers' Day will be celebrated at the 小蓝视频 Museum of Mining on Sunday (May 9). "Queen for a Day" honours mother and one child with a free visit. As long as it lasts, there will be a special cake, too. International celebrity 'Yukon Dan" will also be on hand.



In honour of Mother's Day on Sunday (May 9) the West Coast Railway Heritage Park invites mum and one child to come and enjoy the park free of charge. There will also be a special Mothers' Day cake for all to enjoy. If you wish more information, please call 604-898-9336.



The Not Just For Seniors program on Community Channel 10 will feature long-time resident Nellie Greatrex. It will be shown on Tuesday, May 11 at 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. and on Wednesday, May 12 at 10 a.m., 7 p.m. and 10 p.m.



The Squamish Food Bank will open its doors on Wednesday, May 12 from 12 noon to 1 p.m. in the Elks' Hall on Second Avenue. Donations are always welcome and cheques can be mailed to the SFB, c/o Box 207, Garibaldi Highlands, 小蓝视频, V0N 1T0.



The Vancouver Coastal Health is pleased to offer for the second time a workshop for parents entitled "Are You An Askable Parent?" Suggestions you will hear include: what kind of sexual health information is needed at the various ages; what kind of words to use; exploring your own personal beliefs around sensitive topics and how to discuss sexual health with teens and how to encourage abstinence. The workshop is free of charge and will be held in the Squamish Public Library on Thursday, May 13 from 7 to 9 p.m. It will be led by nurse/educator Rae McDonald who had worked in the field of sexuality education for over five years. The fourth annual Children's Hospital garage sale sponsored by the Royal Bank will be held on Saturday, May 15 with the location still to be determined. Anyone wishing to donate to this sale is asked to call 604-892-2120 (days) or 604-898-2072 (evenings) and arrangements will be made for pickup and/or delivery.



Members of the Hearts in Motion Walking Club are asked to meet at the main door at the Brennan Park Recreation Centre on Friday, May 14 at 9:30 a.m. New members are always welcome and for more information call Elaine Kotyk at 604-898-9498 or Julie Miles at 604-898-4316.



The Knights of Columbus will hold its annual garage sale on Saturday, May 15 from 9 a.m. to noon at the St. Joseph's Church, at 2449 The Boulevard. Donations are welcome at the church Friday night, or call Al: 604-898-3435 or Ron: 604-898-3061 for pick up.



The Canadian National Institute for the Blind is the winner in the annual Journey for Sight Walk as it benefits the SNIB library services, White Canes and Camperships for children and adults who are blind, visually impaired and deaf/blind. The Squamish Lions Club is sponsoring this fundraising walk on Sunday, May 16 at the West Coast Railway Heritage Park. Do you or someone you know have a garden that you'd like to see in the 2004 Squamish Garden Tour? They are looking for gardens for this summer's upcoming garden tour.
