After a most successful Day Out With Thomas event in June the West Coast Railway Heritage Park is ready for another big day, as tomorrow, Saturday (July 10) marks the 10th anniversary of the opening of the park. Celebrations begin at 10:30 a.m. with the official ceremony and speeches. At that time, a special cake and other goodies will be served. Many activities are planned throughout the day and admission is by donation. Hats off to all the volunteers and staff who have given hours and hours of their time over these past 10 years to make the WCRHP the "jewel" it is for our community and beyond.
As part of the tenth anniversary celebrations at the park, two concerts by Vancouver-based tribute artists will perform under the big top. At 2 p.m., ABBA-Cadabra performs and at 7 p.m., The Shania Experience concert will begin. Concert tickets are available at the Heritage Park gift shop or by calling 604-898-9336. The price is $15 for one concert and $25 for both and all proceeds are being donated back to the Heritage Park.
The sixth annual Squamish Garden Tour will take place on Sunday (July 11) from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This year there will be 10 great gardens to view at your leisure. Tickets are $10 each and are available at the Squamish Public Library, Billie's Bouquet and at Anna's Attic. Raffle tickets will be sold at the gardens.
While many people plan vacations, others look forward to the monthly distribution of groceries from the Squamish Food Bank. The doors will open at the Elks' Hall on Second Avenue from 12 noon to 1 p.m. on Wednesday (July 14). Donations of non-perishable food items are welcome at the specially marked boxes in the supermarkets. Cash donations are also welcome and can be mailed to the SFB, c/o Box 207, Garibaldi Highlands, СÀ¶ÊÓƵ, V0N 1T0.
The early bird gets to bird! If you are in fact an early bird, why not join the monthly bid count sponsored by the Squamish Estuary Conservation Society? Novice to expert birders are welcome for half a day of birding followed by lunch at the Howe Sound Inn & Brewing Company. The date this month is Sunday (June 11) and participants are asked to meet at the Brew Pub at 7 a.m.
The Summer Reading Club at the Squamish Public Library gives children the opportunity to interact with others while enjoying reading, games, crafts and many fun activities. The Hooked on Books programs for ages six to eight years is held each Tuesday to Aug/ 24 from 12 to 1 p.m. or 2 to 3 p.m. Registrations are now being taken or phone the library at 604-892-3110.
The Squamish Soup Kitchen is in desperate need of volunteers to help with their lunch program. The Soup Kitchen is open each Tuesday and Thursday and if you could spare a few hours on either of these days it would be much appreciated. There are summer arts camps available for children seven to 13 years and three different programs are offered. There are other programs offered for adults as well. Former resident Barbara Pell, now of Victoria, had a serious accident in April and suffered a broken neck. She is making slow but steady progress and is a patient at the Eric Martin Pavilion at the Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria. A friend from Squamish said Barbara would much appreciate a card or note or phone call to 1-250-370-8383. We all wish Barb well in her recovery.
Extreme Adventures is back by popular demand at the Brennan Park Recreation Centre. It is planned for the nine- to 12-year-olds and the first week, Water World is set for July 19 to 23.
