Get ready to do the Time Warp again, as Sea to Sky Entertainment brings the outrageous cult classic Rocky Horror Show to the area's stages just in time for Halloween.
Based on the cult movie The Rocky Horror Picture Show starring Tim Curry, the stage version of the musical was written by Richard O'Brien, who wrote the book, screenplay, all the music and even played the role of Riff Raff in the movie.
The story centres around Brad and Janet, a couple who stumble upon the weird castle of Dr. Frank-N-Furter, a crossdressing mad-scientist from the planet Transexual. Brad and Janet have arrived at the castle on the same night the doctor brings to life his "beautiful creature" named Rocky, who was created for the release of Frank's "tension".
The show's director/producer, Adriane Polo, said the season was a big factor in choosing which play to stage."It was because of the time of year," she said. "We wanted to do something for fall. We looked at Christmas shows, and there were already shows planned, so we looked at Halloween."
Polo said she expects the show to be popular.
"It is a cult classic," she said. "It hasn't been done in the area for a while and it is just such a fun play to do."
There are a couple of differences between the movie and stage production though, she warned. Those expecting to bring toast, newspapers and water guns to use in the infamous audience participation which takes place at most screenings of the movie, will be disappointed.
"There is really no audience participation in the play, other than the end where they can get up and dance," she said. "The thing is, it is a theatre and we really can't have people throwing stuff in the theatre because then someone would have to pay for the cleaning bill. It is pretty similar to the movie, though, except one scene is missing."
The missing scene is the one in which a severed head is served for dinner.
Filling in the fishnet stockings of Frank-N-Furter for the production is Richard Trann, who said he jumped at the chance to play a role from one of his favourite movies.
"Adriane took me out for a coffee and asked me if I was interested in doing it and I said yes," he said. "I have never worked with Adriane before though, but she had seen me on stage. I think my gregariousness on stage somehow convinced her I would look good in women's lingerie. I was familiar with the role and I am a big fan of Rocky Horror, so I was quite honoured, although I had never given much thought to wearing lingerie before."
Catch Trann in fishnets and a live band performing the music at Eagle Eye Theatre on Oct. 26 to 29.
The show will debut at My Place in Whistler on Oct. 13, 14 and 15.
