Sir Arthur Conan Doyle has entertained generations with the timeless Sherlock Holmes stories. Now his newest fans in Squamish are bringing to life the author's campy, nasty and mysterious characters.
Don Ross Secondary School grade 9/10 drama class presents The Mystery of the Missing Letters Wednesday and Thursday (March 25 and 26) at 7 p.m. Drama instructor Kathleen Riley said she chose the play because it fits the class's dynamic personalities by providing dynamic characters.
"Sherlock Holmes has bigger character parts, mostly dynamic male roles, but there are also great female parts - the sweet damsel in distress thing and also nasty, evil female roles," said Riley.
Riley was at first unsure about putting on a production in the somewhat ill-equipped school - the play is being held in the multi-purpose room. But when the opportunity was presented to drama students, the 19 actors and two stage managers unanimously agreed to do it.
"It's kind of an adventure for this school, but they're doing it more for the love of drama than anything else."
The class has been in rehearsal for eight weeks and are putting their "heart and soul into it," said Riley. Watch for Gashouse Gus to deliver enthusiastic, hilarious lines.
Mystery of the Missing Letters is about Alice Faulkner who is being chased by the evil Dr. Moriarty for letters she inherited when her sister died. The sister was a royal concubine and the letters could cause damage to the Prince if it fell into the wrong hands.
The episode isn't one of the author's more famous stories, but audiences are sure to catch references to the infamous Hounds of the Baskervilles.
Riley expects to see plenty of friendly faces in the audience with students, teachers and family members coming to cheer students [email protected]
