Riverdale has been renewed for a seventh season.

Before streaming became the dominant way to binge watch shows, episodic TV had a more rigid schedule, with many series starting in September and finishing up around April.

For shows that have held onto that format, spring is the time that executives decide which shows are renewed and which ones are cancelled. (Or until a reboot.)

Hollywood trade magazines like eagerly track this information with a running list of shows that are safe for another season, on the cusp of cancellation and gone for good.

A few shows filmed in and around the Lower Mainland might not be back.

A Million Little Things

This multi-layered series has a large cast and criss-crossing storylines (like the much-loved This Is Us, which is in its final season). Deadline reports that its odds at renewal are about 50-50.

The 4400

This complex reboot mixes sci-fi and mystery. When 4,400 people are disappeared via a light beam and deposited at the base of a mountain, there’s a cascade of strange events that follow their rescue.

Charmed

Another reboot on the CW roster is Charmed, which is in its fourth season and often films in New Westminster. Considering its streaming potential, it does have a strong chance of coming back.

Legends of Tomorrow

This DC Comic show has run for seven seasons. Will there be a lucky number eight? TBD.

Batwoman

After the first season, this series went through a major cast change as star Ruby Rose left and was replaced by Javicia Leslie. There’s been a significant slip in the ratings but there’s still a chance this series will return.

Naomi

While most superhero characters have a long comic book history, this unique and newer origin story was written in 2019 and adapted for TV by Ava DuVernay. It centres around a brilliant teen (Naomi) who runs a Superman fansite and is drawn into the action when something mysterious happens in her Oregon town.

Riverdale

Hoping to catch a glimpse of Cole Sprouse at Starbucks? There’s still time as Riverdale has been renewed for a seventh season. So far there’s been a serial killer, a cult, aliens and a time leap that helped bridge the gap between the characters’ and actors’ ages. Where season seven will go is anyone’s guess.

The Flash

True to its name, The Flash seems to be everywhere in Vancouver and it’s not unusual to run into a film set on the street.

Kung-Fu

Vancouver stands in for San Francisco in this series and Chinatown landmarks (like the Chinese Cultural Centre Museum) and storefronts and restaurants like Gain Wah (on Keefer) are featured. The series also films out of a studio in Langley.

Nancy Drew

This series is set in Horseshoe Bay, Maine and often films in Horseshoe Bay, West Vancouver. It differs from the book series in that this college-age Nancy deals with supernatural mysteries and is not a high-school detective who solves crimes.

Superman and Lois

A suburban take on the superhero and his super journalist wife as they navigate the realities of modern parenthood earned rave reviews for its first season and is already filming season two.
