Valleycliffe Christmas carollers set a new record

Valleycliffe Christmas carollers set a new record on Dec. 8.

The group collected about 66 kilograms (145 pounds) of human food and an additional 54 kg (120 pounds) of dog food for the food bank.

That’s more than has ever been raised in the 16 years the annual carol has been running.

“Montreal Dan” Butler, pictured in the foreground, started the event back in 2008.

He wanted to recreate the Christmas carolling culture he grew up with in small-town Ontario—something that he found has faded away.

Since then, Butler’s been rounding up friends to go door-to-door to give unrehearsed—but enthusiastic—renditions of holiday classics to the neighbourhood, all the while gathering food for charity.

Check the Facebook group next December for details on how to join.
