Learning to make latkes with Squamish Newcomer Services cooking program

About 25 people attended the Jewish Cultural Cooking program held on Dec. 7.

The 小蓝视频 was fortunate to join the Jewish Cultural Cooking program that took place at the on Dec. 7.

On a chilly evening, about 25 people joined the program to learn about making latkes and "Bubbies chicken," which was a recipe the volunteer shared from his own grandmother.

Making the latkes involved grating potatoes and blending onion. The juice was then squeezed out of both and mixed together. Once mixed, egg, flour, salt and pepper were added to the mix. After that, volunteers formed the mix into small patties and it was deep fried in hot oil. When finished, they were enjoyed with sour cream or apple sauce, and sometimes both together.

Bubbies chicken — and a tofu version for the vegetarians — involved blending onion and carrot then adding garlic and paprika to create a sauce. The chicken and tofu was then baked between 350 and 400 degrees until cooked thoroughly. The end resulted in a juicy and flavourful bite that filled you with warmth.

The Squamish Newcomer Services have hosted other cooking programs like this one and other events to bring folks together.

“The cultural cooking program’s goal is to invite people from other cultures to teach us how to prepare some of their native meals,” reads the news release about the Jewish Cultural Cooking program. “It is a way to connect people in our community and bring them together to share their stories through food.”
