Richmond resident Derek Ma was able to capture this picture of the aurora borealis on Saturday night.

A rare show of the northern lights – also known as aurora borealis – was spotted around the Lower Mainland Saturday night, including in Richmond.

Richmond resident Derek Ma captured the light show at 11 p.m. Friday night.

He took the picture close to Railway Avenue and Blundell Road.

According to space.com, the sun constantly ejects charged particles creating a solar wind. When the wind hits Earth’s upper atmosphere, the aurora borealis is created.
