Photos: When Deep Cove freezes over

The North Vancouver marina was partially frozen over this week, something resident Yvonne Leonard has only seen a couple times in 21 years.

It might be more frequent than in hell, but Deep Cove doesn’t freeze over very often.

According to nearby resident Yvonne Leonard, who snapped photos of the icy scene Wednesday evening, the last time she saw frozen water at the local marina was 15 years ago.

“I have lived in Deep Cove for 21 years. I’ve seen it frozen like this once or twice [before],” she said. “I think the last time was in either 2008 or 2009.”

After a Pineapple Express broke balmy records in December, an Arctic intrusion blasted the Lower Mainland with record-breaking cold in mid-January.

On Wednesday, Leonard’s photos caught the glowing sheen of boat lights atop the silvery surface of the frigid ocean water, circled by the snow-capped trees around the North Vancouver bay.

Leonard said she didn’t see anyone silly enough to try and walk on the surface.

“I think it was an extremely thin layer that would have cracked instantly under foot,” she said.
